Strong protest over death of Dalit girl in inhumane incident

 


In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, women and men have raised their voices for justice over the death of a Dalit (lower caste Hindu) girl who was gang-raped.

According to Indian media reports, a 19-year-old girl who was raped and tortured in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district died on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a Delhi hospital. The victim was allegedly raped and tortured September 14. According to the report, the victim girl was allegedly gang-raped and tortured by four to five youths in the village and was shifted to a hospital in Uttar Pradesh in critical condition. According to doctors, several bones of the victim's body were broken and her tongue was also cut off.

Due to Dalit affiliation, the police showed no interest in the incident and did not take any steps to arrest the accused. After the victim's family protested, people took to the streets to show solidarity. According to the report, the police have so far arrested four persons on the charge of gang rape and the incident is being investigated. The victim's brother said, "My mother, sister and elder brother went to a field to mow the lawn. My brother came home with a big bundle of hay and my mother and sister were mowing a short distance away." The family informed the police about the main culprit of the incident but the investigating officer did not release the details. The family members said that the accused often harassed people belonging to the Dalit community and because of his influence, he has so far made many girls the target of his lust.

Former Chief Minister of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and Dalit leader Mayawati has demanded the government to provide all possible help to the affected family and bring the culprits to justice as soon as possible. UP police vehemently denied the allegations made by the family. Police officer Prakash Kumar issued a statement in this regard in which he said that we have arrested one accused, later arrested three more accused on his identification, all the four accused are under investigation.
