Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad appointed new Emir of Kuwait

Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has been appointed the country's new Emir.

According to Arab media reports, after the death of the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Cabinet of Kuwait announced the appointment of the Crown Prince as the new Emir.

After the appointment of Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber, all the powers of the Amir were automatically transferred to him. The new emir of Kuwait is 83 years old and is the half-brother of the former chief.

On the other hand, the government has declared 40 days of mourning for the death of the Emir of Kuwait, while other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, have declared three days of mourning.

It may be recalled that Emir of the Gulf state of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah passed away this afternoon at the age of 91 in the United States, which has also been confirmed by the royal family.

Sheikh Al-Sabah Al-Ahmad moved to the United States for treatment in July this year, after which he underwent surgery in Kuwait.

Kuwaiti officials did not provide further details on Amir's illness, but said he had traveled to the United States for an operation.

It should be noted that Sheikh Al-Sabah Al-Ahmad assumed the position of the Emir of the oil-rich Arab state of Kuwait in 2006, while before that he was also in charge of the foreign affairs and policies of the state for 50 years. He was re-appointed Foreign Minister of Kuwait in 1993, a position he held until 2003.

It should be noted that the Al-Sabah dynasty has been ruling the Gulf state of Kuwait for the last 260 years. Kuwait is one of the six countries in the world with large oil reserves.
