Oman welcomes Israel-Bahrain 'peace deal'

Oman has welcomed the move to a "peace agreement" between Israel and Bahrain and hopes it will help bring peace between Israel and Palestine.

According to Reuters, the government said in a statement that "(Oman) hopes that the new strategic measures taken by some Arab countries will end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and make East Jerusalem an independent capital." They will help establish peace based on the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Israel's intelligence minister said on August 13, just days after the announcement of the agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, that Oman could also formalize relations with the country.

Oman has welcomed the decisions of the UAE and Bahrain but has not commented on its prospects for normal relations.

In 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Oman and discussed peace initiatives in the Middle East with then-Omani leader Sultan Qaboos.

On the other hand, Turkey and Iran have condemned the agreement reached between Israel and Bahrain.

It may be recalled that a month ago, on August 15, a "peace agreement" was announced between Israel and the United Arab Emirates to restore diplomatic relations.

In less than a month, it became the second Arab country to normalize relations with its former rival Israel.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said Ankara was "concerned" by the move and "strongly condemned" the agreement.

Ahmed Majdalani, the minister for social affairs in the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, said the agreement was tantamount to stabbing Palestine and the Palestinian people in the back.

Hamas, the party that controls the Gaza Strip, called it an "aggression" that started "serious problems" for Palestinian purposes.

It should be noted that on August 15, US President Donald Trump, while announcing a peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), said that the two countries have agreed to establish bilateral relations.

Donald Trump said in a tweet that normalizing relations between the UAE and Israel was a "huge step forward".

On August 18, Yossi Cohen, head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, visited the UAE to discuss security issues.

It should be noted that this was the first high-level visit of an Israeli official to Abu Dhabi after the 'peace agreement' between the United Arab Emirates and Israel.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei had said that the UAE had betrayed the Islamic world and the Palestinians by signing an agreement to normalize relations with Israel.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabia had said that it could not establish diplomatic relations with Israel in imitation of the United Arab Emirates unless the Jewish state signed a peace agreement with the Palestinians.

In addition, Prime Minister Imran Khan had said on the peace agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel that Pakistan's position is very clear that we can never recognize Israel until the Palestinians get their due.
