A woman who was subjected to mass humiliation in the Indian state of West Bengal has been fined Rs 60,000 by a panchayat.
A widow was returning home from the bazaar with her acquaintance on a bike in West Bengal's Birbhum district. On the way, 5 people stopped their bikes and kidnapped them and locked them in a room. The five accused later took the woman to the forest and collectively humiliated her.
Later, when the widow reached her village, the panchayat imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on her. The panchayat alleged that she was riding a bike with a non-male.
Police have arrested the five accused after the case came to light. SP police say it is not yet clear whether the woman was humiliated as punishment for hanging out with a non-male or for some other reason.
