An Islamic court in Nigeria has sentenced a 22-year-old singer to death for blasphemy.
In the northern Nigerian state of Kano, 22-year-old Yahya Sharif Amin's song went viral on WhatsApp, insulting the lyrics of the song, which caused an uproar across the country.
Police arrested the young singer and produced him in court, where he was tried under the anti-blasphemy law. The accused did not deny the allegations. Judge Muhammad Kani, after hearing the arguments of the lawyers, sentenced the accused to death.
The court wrote in its judgment that singer Yahya Sharif would be allowed to appeal against the verdict. The northern Nigerian state of Kano has Sharia law in place and several people have been sentenced to death since 1999, but only one execution has been carried out so far.
