Hong Kong: Scientists and technicians at HKSUT (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) have developed an artificial eye that is round like a natural eye, meaning "3D". They call it "ECI" or "electrochemical eye".
Prior to that, all the artificial eye samples were developed using spot (2D) CCD / digital cameras. In this sense, it is the first artificial eye to be invented by arranging a variety of complex parts in a circle. Just like the natural eye.
Significantly, just as the natural eye (including the human eye) has a cluster of nerves just behind the retina that travels through various other nerves to the brain and creates a sense of sight, so does the electrochemical eye. There are also "nerves" made of liquid metal that transmit the view from it to the display device or screen.
Currently, the reflection from this eye is very blurred, but the experts who developed it say that the reflection from a 3D artificial eye depends on the number of liquid metal nerves attached to it. As this number increases in the future, the view of this eye will become clearer, even the view seen through the artificial 3D eye will be better and fuller than that of the human eye.
Details of this first prototype of the artificial 3D eye have been published in a recent issue of the research journal Nature.
