The results of the US presidential election will be known by tomorrow, which will show whether Donald Trump has won his second term or Joe Biden, who was the Vice President under Barack Obama.
However, if Donald Trump fails in this election, he will be the first American president of the 21st century to not be elected for a second term.
Overall, this will be the first time in nearly three decades that an American president has failed to win again.
The last time this happened was in the 1992 election, when Republican President George W. Bush lost to Democratic candidate Bill Clinton after his first term.
In fact, in the last 100 years, there have been only four presidents who have failed to win re-election, while a total of 10 presidents in US history have stood for re-election but failed.
George H. W. Bush
As noted above, this is the last president in 28 years who has not been re-elected and lost to rival Bill Clinton.
In the United States, eight years after Bill Clinton, George HW Bush's son George W. Bush defeated the Democratic candidate Al Gore and won a second term.
Jimmy Carter
Democrat Jimmy Carter failed to win a second term in 1980 and was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan.
This is the first time in US history that two presidents have failed to win a second term in a row.
Gerald Ford
Gerald Ford was made president when his Republican president, Richard Nixon, resigned over the Watergate scandal.
Gerald Ford was defeated by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 election. Interestingly, Gerald Ford became president without winning and had not been elected vice president before, but in 1973 at that time. He was made vice president after the resignation of the vice president of the party.
So the defeat at the hands of Jimmy Carter meant that he never won an election, but fortunately became vice president and president.
Herbert Hoover
Herbert Hoover of the Republican Party also won the presidency for a short time in 1928 and was defeated by his Democratic rival Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 election.
During Herbert Hoover's presidency, the United States experienced the Wall Street Crash in 1929, which led to the Great Depression, the effects of which were felt around the world, including in the United States.
William Howard Taft
He was the first president of the 20th century to fail a second term.
Republican William Howard Taft is the only president in US history to have served as Chief Justice of the United States and lost the 1912 election to Democrat Harif Woodrow Wilson.
Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison
Both failed in the election after their first term, but there is an interesting fact.
Grover Cleveland was defeated by Republican Benjamin Harrison in a second attempt for a second term in 1888, but Grover Cleveland defeated Benjamin Harrison in 1892 and was re-elected president.
Grover Cleveland is the only president in US history to have been elected twice but in separate terms.
Martin Van Bourne
Martin van Bourne was the founder of the Democratic Party and failed to get re-elected in 1840.
He was defeated by William Henry Harrison, who held the presidency for only 31 days and died at the age of 68, the first US president to die during his term and hold the office for the shortest time.
John Quincy Adams
The sixth president in American history failed to win a second term in 1828 and was defeated by Andrew Jackson.
He was the second president in US history to step down from the White House after his first term, and his first president was his father, John Adams.
John Adams
John Adams was the first president in American history not to be re-elected.
He was defeated by Thomas Jefferson in the 1800 election.
